Thank you

The launch of Stichting Cassandra wouldn’t have happened without the support of hundreds of people. A word of thanks from the founder.

Speaking out about unspeakable things humans can do to each other is difficult. That we live in 2020 and sexual and psychological violence is still ubiquitous, is disappointing.

It’s upsetting to admit we can’t always be proud of people. Even more so when we find out we are not believed when speaking up. I wouldn’t have found my voice had not one person believed me. I want you to remember that, in case you feel alone.

For some reason many people are afraid to ask for help when it concerns mental health care. When you break your leg you usually go to a doctor to receive medical care. It’s strange we give our brain much less attention. It’s an organ that deserves protection and medical care, just like the rest of your body. I hope one day we live in a world where protecting our mind is as important as protecting the rest of our body.

Charlotte Wade by Zara’s Comics for Stichting Cassandra.

Those I love, therapy and medication, help me get through the dark days.

Next to that, it’s knowing there were strangers who cared about me when I wasn’t doing well. Sometimes these strangers would be people with horrific pasts who still had the energy to empower others. Take Charlotte Wade for example. Charlotte is a young woman who spoke out about what her convicted step-grandfather did to her. She actively shared her fight with PTSD on Twitter, always available to speak with victims. Throughout my journey to founding Stichting Cassandra, she’s inspired me in many ways. It’s why I asked our artist Zara’s Comics to draw an artwork inspired by her. To let her know, in a way: thank you.

Strangers like Charlotte are everywhere, and might become your friends. Some may have never been raped, but are still fighting for justice. They will listen and fight with you. They will show you spirit, solidarity and community.

You will only find those strangers if you accept what has happened to you and use your voice.

When I feel alone, I tell myself: I’m not. I never was. I was just unable to see the light around me, until I asked for help. Then those who could guide my path found me, or I found them. I hope you will ask for help too if you ever need it, and especially: keep asking, don’t give up.

I want to thank every person that has been there for me and other rape victims these last few years. Stichting Cassandra is the result of a movement, not one person.

Vi vil ikke tie.
